Universal Dividing Head is a machine tool accessory mounted on milling machines, designed to divide workpieces into any number of equal parts. Utilizing an indexing graduated ring and vernier, positioning pins and indexing plates, as well as change gears, it can divide workpieces clamped between centers or in a chuck into any angular divisions. It enables the division of a circumference into arbitrary equal segments, assisting the machine tool in machining grooves, spur gears, helical gears, Archimedean spiral cams, and other components using various tooling.
Primary Functions:
Perform arbitrary circumferential divisions or linear displacement indexing on workpieces.
Position workpieces at required angles (vertical, horizontal, or tilted).
Structure:
The base of the dividing head houses a swivel body. The spindle can rotate within a vertical plane, adjustable upward by 90° and downward by 10°. The front end of the spindle is typically equipped with a three-jaw chuck or a center. For indexing, the positioning pin is withdrawn, and the handle is rotated. This drives a 1:1 straight spur gear pair, which in turn rotates the worm. A 1:40 worm gear set then transmits motion to the spindle for indexing. When the handle completes one full revolution, the worm gear rotates the spindle by 1/40 of a revolution. The required handle rotations n for division is calculated as:
Constructed from high-strength FC30 cast iron, suitable for milling machines or specialized equipment requiring simple division machining.
Adjustable tilt angle from 0° to 90°, with direct indexing plates enabling rapid divisions (2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24, etc.).
Clear tilt and rotation graduations (360° per full rotation, 1° per minor division), ensuring precise and efficient angle adjustments.
